Earth Day is one of the largest annual global events that takes place on April 22 each year. On this day, we as global citizens are reminded of our responsibility to our planet – our home – and that in fact, each and every day should be Earth Day.
Our Earth offers us so much, and most of all it allows us the experience to travel and see some of the world’s most beautiful and breath-taking locations, while some sites and locations leave us in awe of their structure and functionality.
When people picture Ireland, they usually see a land filled with many green fields, and while that is true, Ireland is also ‘green’ in many other ways.Ireland has long been a ‘green’ eco-friendly country offering many sustainable, nature-based and culturally responsible travel options.
There are many activities and sites to visit which have been accredited for their responsible tourism practices. While the tourism industry is so vital to Ireland’s economy, Irish citizens and business owners recognize the utmost importance of their responsibility to keep Ireland green and clean, and constantly improve upon their practices.
When visiting Ireland, there are many ways to get around that are eco-friendly; bikes are readily available to rent in many cities and large towns, or if driving rent a bio-diesel car, as well as avail of the many rail transportation options. Many accommodations also strive to ensure their policies are environmentally sustainable, incorporating practices such as growing their own produce and allowing guests to plant trees nearby to the sites. While staying at a family-run farm, guests can see first-hand the farming cycle and traditions such as cutting silage! As an island, there is no shortage of environmentally friendly activities to experience the best of Ireland, from hiking and biking, to kayaking and wind sailing. Along the coastline, perhaps join a seaweed farmer – not only will you learn about seaweed, you can see how to forage it and cook with it too!
In addition to many of these responsible tourism practices, Ireland has been allocated funding of €13 billion Euro from the European Union which is to be distributed between 2021 and 2027 to help with its transition to a low-carbon economy.
The natural beauty of Ireland has attracted tourists from around the globe for so many years, and the goal is to keep Ireland the ‘green’-est it’s been for its citizens, and the neighboring global citizens around our beautiful planet. When the time is right to travel again, we hope to welcome you to discover all of Ireland’s greenery and green practices!
